10/23 Writing Homework

Create a word web (for or against) for one of the news items we watched today in class on CNN Student News.  Come up with some ideas as to how you could support your position on the topic.  Remember, whatever news item you choose, make sure that it has a "side" to take.  A news item on the 'biggest chocolate chip cookie' would be a tough one to take a side with.  This will be due upon your arrival to class Thursday.

Monday, September 30, 2013

Today we went over the word webs for their CNN topic that were due today.

Due tomorrow are their power 1 and two power 2s.  They will be due when they come into class tomorrow.

Final paper for "The Lady or the Tiger?" is due tomorrow.  Students had 35 minutes to work on this in class.  They ALL understand that it is due when they arrive to class, first thing, tomorrow (Wednesday).

If you are hand writing it:
Blue or black pen
Only write on one side of the paper
Adhere to the margins
If you make an error in a word, cross it out, or white it out.  If you have too many, you should probably start over.
Make sure to indicate paragraph separation

If you type it:
Use black ink only
Use the standard margins
Use a traditional font...the default should be fine
Indicate paragraph separation with a space or an indent.

If something happens and you printer isn't working, runs out of ink, runs out of paper, etc., email it to me.  Simply "copy/paste" your test into the body of the email.  DO NOT ATTACH a document.  I often do not have the same program you used.

  • lWhat was behind the door (your position)
  • lPrediction as to what happens after the choice is made.  This is NOT about immediately after the door is opened, but rather, what will happen with the princess/man.  Basically the consequences (can be good or bad) of the choice.

Monday, February 4, 2013

Today we went over the power 3s that students created for today.

Assigned for tomorrow is the REST of the power 3s on both sets of powerboxes...so, essentially 6 sentences.  Students had 20 minutes to work on them in class.

Thursday, January 31, 2013

Today we went over the 2nd set of powerboxes.  Afterwards, students had about 15 minutes to work on today's assignment, which will be due tomorrow (Friday).  That assignment needs to be in finalized form, of both sets of power boxes.  Still only power 1s and 2s.

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

Today students handed in the 2nd set of quotes.  Now we are starting on our powerboxes.  Due tomorow is one set of power boxes...only P1s and P2s.

Remember that power 1s need to have:
Transition word
Position (lady or tiger)
Point of the paragraph (likely an emotion like jealousy, hatred, love)

Power 2s need to have:
Transition word
Point of the paragraph
Quote from the story

"The Lady or the Tiger" story can be found HERE

Using your 6, or more, parts from the story that support your decision about which door, now decide how you can group those into 2 paragraphs as your main details.  But that is NOT your assignment for the weekend.  For your assignment, that is due Tuesday, pick another 2 of your quotes and explain why they prove your position on what choice was made.

We talked about this way of thinking in class:

Position:  Lady or Tiger
Quote from the story:___________________
What does the quote mean/infer?
How does this support your position?

The ‘quotes’ from the story are phenomenal evidence to support your claim. Expand on those by using logic and personal experience.

Example: “Never before had anyone dared to love the daughter of the king!” This shows that the act of dating the king’s daughter was a crime. And in doing so, the man tempted fate. It showed that he loved the princess so much, that he was willing to risk his life.

Students had 20 minutes to work on this in class.  The following will be due Friday:

Using the short Story by Frank Stockton, "The Lady or the Tiger," decide which came out…the lady or the tiger. If you need to re read the story, you can find it HERE.

Due Tomorrow, come up with your side/position and 6 details from the story to support your claim.

Focus on details from the story to support your side. You may also use personal experience.

You will eventually write a multi paragraph essay citing evidence from the story to support your claims.

This will be written the same way you would write a persuasive essay since you are essentially persuading the reader to side with you.

Remember when you use sentences from the short story, to put them in quotes.
Example: In the story, it stated that, "The semi-barbaric king had a daughter…"
The quoted section comes directly from the short story and therefore you need to put it in quotes.

We will be doing individual writing conferences this week.  Today, students received their 5 paragraph paper back to assess.  In the subsequent days, we will talk about the good and the bad...mostly good I hope.

Here are the questions they needed to answer for tomorrow.  The ones in the yellow are to be written.

Before we meet, here is what I need from you:
1. Mark the paragraph that you think is your “best” by placing a star next to it.
2. Tell me why another paragraph is not your best.  Be sure to explain.
3. Put a star next to your intro or conclusion to tell me which one you want me to focus on.
4. Tell me “why” the other was not as good.

Friday, January 11, 2013

Due on Monday is the final draft of their resolution/goal paper.  Students had 15 minutes Thursday to work on it and about 35 minutes today.

nOne sort of resolution has to do only with oneself. You might decide to stop eating candy, to exercise more, or to watch less TV.

nOther resolutions might involve family or friends. You could resolve to be more patient with your little brother, to be more helpful to your mom, or not to get into fights with your friends.

nSome resolutions are about school and the outside world, such as getting to class on time, trying for better grades, or not teasing the neighbor's dog.
