Friday...last school day of the year!

We will be allowing students to bring in their electronics in to use from 11:30 to 12:00 for a little fun. The only thing we ask is that if it makes notice, they bring headphones or have a way to mute it.  We all don't want to be listening to funny Hollie Hobby videos.

If students have not finished any major assignments, they will use this time to get caught up. Also, if they still need more time, they will use the afternoon to finish them.

Happy holidays!

Music Announcement

1. There should be papers coming home for parents this week.

2. If you have any small boxes that could be holiday wrapped, nothing in them necessary, the winter music program is in need of about 40 for props.  Just boxes that could be easily managed would be great.

For Preston :)

This year, one of my rotations is writing. I have learned so much about writing from Mr. Thompson. We learn about writing with DOL, rules about grammar, and power boxes for organization.

In writing, I work really hard to be successful. One thing I do well at is D.O.L. tests. D.O.L. stands for Daily Oral Language. Everyday, we search for the errors in the sentences posted on the board. The whole class makes the corrections in their notebooks. When it comes to testing time, he picks 5-7 of the sentences he gave us for practice and quizzes us. Although I can get stressed out taking the tests, my hard work pays off when I get to see my high scores. Most of them are 100%! Turning in my assignments is another area where I excel. Other than the times I have been gone, I have turned in every assignment. It’s a good feeling when I know I did my best and did what my teacher asked of me.

Although writing is a strong subject for me, I struggle with a few areas too. Using a stronger vocabulary is one way I can improve my writing skills. Word choice is important, but it’s challenging because it takes a lot of time editing and revising to find the right word for the right situation. Sometimes I get lazy and use my everyday language so that I can just get it done in class and not have as much homework. Another growing area for me is managing my time wisely. Although I turn everything in on time, it takes me longer than it should. When I’m easily distracted by my surroundings, it makes it more difficult to concentrate. If I am focused, I can write effectively and use my time efficiently.

Thank you for helping me with my struggles and congratulating me on my success. I am blessed to have parents that care about my education and support me.

11/4

Assigned today, and due tomorrow, is for students to explain the importance of each one of the quotes they put in their P2 boxes.  This is not just restating what the quote says, but rather the significance of it.  The quote likely is a result of the author's attempt to imply something for the reader to infer.  What do you, the reader, take from this?  Students had 10-15 minutes to work on this in class.

This needs to be done for all 6 quotes.

We will also have a DOL tests on Thursday since Friday is a 1/2 day.

The DOL Test will likely look like this:

would all the brave men a poem be all right to open our memorial day celebration

can you learn me and jane to speak like dr carson questioned sally

i, to, have just finished reading night visits john smiths long poem

mr handley the principal had spoke to our class on Wednesday

Writing:

We went over last night's homework and gave some good examples of what was expected.  Tonight is to do essentially the same thing for the second emotion and then the quotes that supported it.  Students had 15 minutes to work on this in class.  You can find the short story HERE

Monday, Nov. 2nd

Today we went over today's assignment which is to group the quotes they have into emotions to support their reason as to "why" they think the princes chose life or death.  They need to set them up into powerboxes...just the power 1 and the 3 power 2s.  Students had about 10 minutes to work on this in class.  This should be a very easy assignment and shouldn't take too much time...assuming they have done the other work as well.

6 quotes expanded

Today we worked on taking the 6 quotes from yesterday and expanding on them as well as attaching them to an emotion or theme.  Due tomorrow is explaining what the quote means and what emotion it relates to.  Students had 15 minutes to work on this in class...most got a good start.

Example: “Never before had anyone dared to love the daughter of the king!” This shows that the act of dating the king’s daughter was a crime. And in doing so, the man tempted fate. It showed that he loved the princess so much, that he was willing to risk his life.

10/27

Students need to have 6 pieces for evidence from the short story "The Lady or the Tiger?" that supports their argument if the man lives or dies.  They had 30+ minutes to work on this in class.  If they did not finish this, they need to make sure they get it done at home since it is due tomorrow.  Here is a link to the story..  HERE.

Conclusion due tomorrow

We talked about conclusions and styles of conclusions. One I suggested was making a predictions about future winter breaks. We talked about the purpose of a conclusion and what they should and should not look like.

Introduction

Introduction is due tomorrow in first draft format.  Students had 20+ minutes to work on it in class.

Sentence starters

Due tomorrow:
Take the existing power boxes from their high/low paper and, in complete sentences, use all 4 of the sentence starters discussed in class. (-ly, -ed, -ing, and preposition start).  Between both paragraphs they need to use each one at least once.

Wednesday, January 14, 2015

If you didn't finish this in class today, you are simply to write a 4-5 sentence "showing" how you feel, or what you see, rather than telling. Write to only one of the prompts.

Thursday, January 8, 2015

Tonight

Finalize the power 1s and finish the power 3s for both lows and highs.  The 3s do not need to be in final form, but should finish the thought process of the story.

Tuesday's assignment

Create 2 word webs for the expository write we are starting about your highs and lows over the break.

You need 2 webs. One with your 5 highs and one with your 5 lows. This must be a web, NOT a list.
